Wrestling Dolls

These manequins were used in an installation of Every Day Art at Ranier Gallery. I decided to have some more fun during Erins birthday party and keep the project alive.

ART AND THE EVERY DAY PROJECT

this second photographic assignment immediately put me in mind of warhol's art and his desire to bring into the public eye the mundane aspects of life simply because they weren't aesthetic, associated with 'fine art', or typically found in the gallery space. his specific focus on supermarket foodstuffs in their mundane consumer environment fascinates me. my photograph shows the result of this consumption and its termination: in the rubbish bin (and if there were no tin cans present it really wouldn't be the same!)

The disposable, the quick, the consumed and discarded. The everyday things that pass you by which are ordinary and trivial, come to light when you stop to look at and take in what usually goes unnoticed. The present is so fleeting you cannot keep up and when you become aware of it, it is almost overwhelming to absorb what is going on right in front of you and that you are always looking but never really seeing.

I took this photo while chopping up veges for a stir fry. I was thinking about the different colours and textures of the vegetables which got me thinking about art made from different foods- wouldn't that be interesting? I wonder how many people would consider meal/food preparations, forms of art. We're so used to eating and preparing food that we don't consider it as equipment/mediums for art.

Playground

To me, this old playground is a piece of art. When I saw it I couldn’t help but notice the level of detail which has been put into something which is typically only used by children to play on. Unfortunately many of these old playgrounds are being demolished for new ones, however I believe they should be kept in some form as getting rid of them is destroying art.

i took this picture mainly because i thought the chinese teapot is a good symbol of my chinese culture. Drinking tea is an important custom in both formal and casual chinese occasions. Tea, in my culture is one of the seven daily necessities, the others being firewood, rice, oil, salt, soy sauce and vinegar. I deliberately took the photo off-focused to show my unclear understanding of the chinese culture still.

Almond Bag

ALMOND BAG: This bag i photographed after an extremely exciting trip to our local supermarket. I picked it as a piece of art for its rich brown colours, texture and repetition. I wanted to photograph it in a way that made my super sized bag of almonds look endless. I saw this bag as a reflection of our ignorant consumerism, we refuse to be live recourse's will run out.

Key

KEY: This is my front door key. I chose it because of its inter sting shape, texture, symbolism and above all functionality (it lets me into my house). The key has an inters sting jaggered almost violent shape similar to that of the knife. Which is appropriate as i use as protection ie: to keep things in my house safe. This simple everyday key has many symbolic references for example to the hidden, (secrets lock away) to love (key to my heart) and even authority (some have access to more keys then others,). The key is also a reference to technological development as this century's old security device is being replaced by modern security codes. pin numbers and swipe cards.

Sign Post

SIGN POST:  someone had randomly placed this sign five meters from the waterfront. It reminded me a lot of Banky's anarchic art. I thought it could be a provocative comment on the local development that threatens fremantles waterfront, in a few years will that land be free for public to stand on?

Power Point

POWER POINT: After studying diagrams of the hearts veins and arteries for the Bagus Hati project i thought this power point had similar intestinal qualities. I like the way the wires have intertwined themselves amongst each other. It almost creates an organic quality which is ironic as electrical wires are so far removed from anything nature. The power point could be seen as an art piece which emphasises how far removed from nature we are.

Paintbrushes

Paint brushes can be the tools behind great master pieces, but they are nothing without the idea.

Here are a couple of images I took in Africa as part of my photo essay.

 The Fence Along the Swan

Whether it’s going to uni or the city, I always pass the Swan River. However, I realize now that I have never taken much notice of the ordinary fence that runs along it. I think that something so simple appears very beautiful because it seems so perfect and ordered. It’s also quite interesting how the fence in this photo – taken from inside a moving car – appears almost ephemeral and transient. Is this maybe why it’s usually unnoticed?

I was trying to think of something to photograph which we see in every day life and don't take much notice of... and I thought of make-up. It something we see people put on every day (not this extreme) and most of us over look it. To me it's a type of art because you apply it and it can be used in lots of different ways. Now when I put on make-up I begin to think about what sort of art work I am going to create.

The photograph that I have attached is of my own personal makeup bag. I have chosen to represent this subject as it is often an area of femininity that goes overlooked by males. Makeup is a daily ritual of most females, in an attempt to emphasize their good features and conceal their bad ones. Therefore I am attempting to bring to the males attention a certain aspect of a women's daily routine that would usually go unacknowledged.

For my everyday art i first thought of everyday things we use. But then i looked a bit deeper on some more basic levels of what we utilise during the course of these everyday actions. Here i found the humble soap holder in my shower. Where would the soap go if it didnt have a holder, a home? how would the thing we use to keep clean keep itself clean? ...these are things we never think of when we amble into the shower half asleep in the morning or jump into after a hard day, cleansing away any stress or worries. the soap is always there. what if it wasnt? Everything has a place, and can loose its place, just like people. If we dont pay notice of things that need attention then they we can easily loose grip. This probably sounds like deep philosophical mumbojumbo but thats just me.

thanks for reading,
Emma

These old dutch coffee grinders stand on top of the kitchen cupboard. One is at least a hundred years old and was used by my grandmother and mother. Coffee is an important ritual in the Netherlands and the beans were always ground fresh. So now both grinders stand unused, atop my kitchen cupboard against a lime green background. With their handles each turned away to the outside they make a nice pair. With their identical draws with knobs, being made of wood, to me they are an ode, to past times of many good coffee having been made.

This is a photo of a perfect pink rose. I photographed it because even though beautiful roses are not ‘overlooked’ I feel that a lot of people overlook a lot of what they stand for. To me this Rose is amazing because it is a living thing, it interests me to watch flowers grow and die because it is like we are watching something live to its full extent. When I watch a rose or flower or even weed I feel like I am in a sence in a relationship with it because I know most of what it has been through, and what it is like, I have the potential too se its birth, or when it is ugly, beautifull, alive, dead or in pain, which is a relashionship I have with no other living thing.

I never really observed the things I was surrounded by or immersed in every day, I never stopped to appreciate their form or what they REALLY look like - I just appreciate the instructions or functions they represent.
